Did Ophra Where a White Dress to the Wedding
Sitting across from each other in matching neutral suits, Oprah and Adele strike a memorable pose in the upcoming CBS special, Adele One Night Only, out November 14 at 8:30 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on CBS. Airing five days before the release of her fourth album, Adele spoke to Oprah about the upheaval that inspired the album, and the persona l transformation the album prompted. Speaking to Oprah Daily, Oprah explained how this coordinated fashion moment came to be—and how it very nearly didn't happen.
I was so excited to meet Adele for the first time. Even though I have a closet full of clothes and haven't been anywhere in two years, I wanted something special for the interview in my rose garden.
I thought something in a shade that matched the background of the flowers would be perfect. In early 2020, Jennifer Lopez was wearing a Sally LaPointe suit when she joined my 2020 Vision tour in Los Angeles. Gayle and I loved it so much. So I called Sally's team and we talked about doing something in an apricot color.
Two weeks later, I was sent a picture of what Adele would be wearing. It was a beautiful white suit by Christopher John Rogers. I thought, Whoa, I'm going to look like a parrot next to her. I even had a conversation with Gayle about it. I said, "Oh my God, everybody went to the trouble to get this suit made, and now she's going to be in a neutral color. I don't want to stand out like a peacock." Of course Gayle said, "I love being a peacock." But, listen, I certainly do not love being a peacock. In fact, neutrals tend to be my go-to in everyday life.
I went to my closet to look for something more subdued and came up with a Brunello Cucinelli jumpsuit with a cream-colored jacket. When I walked in and met her for the first time, I was so glad I'd listened to that little whisper and gone with my gut.
I had fretted so much, but it was the right choice for me. The crew ended up blocking out all the colored roses, so you can only see the white ones. I would have looked like a peacock for sure.
In the end, our neutral suits looked perfect together. And I wound up wearing a navy suit with feathers from Sally LaPointe to introduce the concert.
Oh, and keep an eye out for the apricot suit—it may just make an appearance one day.
Adam Glassman's Tips for Wearing White
That old notion of not wearing white after Labor Day? Throw it out. According to Oprah Daily creative director Adam Glassman, white can—and should!—be a staple in your wardrobe, no matter what time of year it is. "The truth is that white clothing looks luxurious no matter what—regardless of price point," says Adam. "It brightens your face and has an illuminating effect that makes every skin tone shine."
Here, Adam shares his top tips for incorporating white into your wardrobe:
- Prioritize versatility. "White suits like Oprah and Adele's are on-trend, but how often are you going to wear a white suit? Trends come and go—you'll get more wear out of classic pieces. Start with a great tailored white jacket, which you can dress up or down; a white shirt, which is a four-season item; and white jeans, which dress up any outfit more than blue jeans do."
- Pay attention to the material. "The difference between fall and winter whites and summer whites is fabrications. In the winter, stay from linen and lightweight cotton. Look for things that have texture, like knits, crepes, gabardines, Ponte jersey, cashmere, and shearling."
- Mix whites and creams. "All shades of whites and creams work together and can be easily mixed and matched. They also look great with other neutrals like shades of gray, camel, taupe, and pastels. While mixing whites and creams, play with texture. I love a chunky knit turtleneck with a skinny pair of white pants or jeans."
- Make white your statement color. "Yes, you can wear white with white—but think about garments as separate, too. You could take that white jacket and you could wear it with a pair of blue jeans or corduroys. I also love how modern and graphic pairing white and black looks. A white jacket over a black dress is fresh, elegant and timeless—and isn't that a look we all strive for?"
- Accessorize with a color. "Add a pop of color with a white outfit. Imagine a cherry red handbag with a great white jacket or dress, or a suede green hobo bag with a cream winter coat. That would look stunning."
- Go for a "plain and fancy" combo at night. "In the evening, a lot of people worry about looking like a bride while wearing white. You can avoid that with what I call the 'plain and fancy' combo. Picture a chunky white turtleneck with a white beaded skirt, or a cream slip dress with a cream oversized boyfriend cardigan over it."
- Choose your shoes wisely. "You can match your outfit with a white shoe—though you may run the risk of looking like you are in a nurse's uniform. If you're wearing a pure white suit like Adele's, consider a shoe that closely matches your skin tone."
- Be prepared. "If you're wearing white, you're almost guaranteed to spill something on yourself—it's just what happens! A Tide To Go stain remover is your best friend whenever you leave the house wearing white."
